Special schools and colleges approved under section 41 in England

Section 41 of the Children and Families Act 2014 (the Act) allows the Secretary of State, by order, to publish a list of approved independent special schools and special post-16 institutions. Institutions can only be included on the list with their consent. The Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014 set out the criteria for inclusion and removal of institutions. The list is published on GOV.UK.

Pupil referral units (PRUs)

These provide education for children who are excluded, sick, or otherwise unable to attend a mainstream or special school. A number of local authority maintained units are in place across Staffordshire.

Alternative provision

We sometimes use alternative provision. This is commissioned directly by our PRUs or on occasion the special educational needs and disabilities alternative provision team.

A list of alternative providers is available below:

Further statutory guidance for all educational settings providing alternative provision is also available.
