How we can help your child/young person

Here is how we have helped a young person called Lucy to access a new group:

Lucy who is a wheelchair user had been looking to access a group with other young people with similar support needs.  The support worker found a wheelchair basketball group for Lucy to try.  A meeting was arranged with the coach ahead of the first session so that Lucy’s support needs could be discussed with him and Lucy could find out more about the group.

Lucy was initially very anxious but the Support Worker helped her to overcome her main fear which was transferring from her chair to the specialised chair.  The worker helped her with the transfer in and out of the chair and she soon felt comfortable.

Lucy has regularly attended the sessions with the support of the worker and her family.  Lucy has made new friends and she now has a hoop at home so that she can practice shooting.  The worker has also taken Lucy swimming so that she is able to take part in an activity without her chair.  Lucy says that she loves the freedom of moving about in the water like everyone else in the pool.
