Who can use our service?

Adults who have speech, language, communication and/or eating and drinking needs.

Are there any costs?

There are no costs.

How can I refer?

A referral can be made by a GP, other health/social care professional or by an individual or their family/carer. Please contact your local Speech and Language team for referral advice.

What happens after referral?

You will get a telephone call or a letter to arrange an appointment with a speech and language therapist for assessment.

Who will we see?

Initially, a Speech and Language Therapist and following this a Speech and Language Therapist and/or a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant.

What happens when I come to the service?

Speech and language therapy usually includes:

  • Assessment
  • Advice
  • Diagnosis
  • Therapy – this may be direct (working directly with the individual) or indirect (therapist working through a carer or other professional)
  • Programmes and resources to support work at home and in a setting
  • Training – person specific or topic specific

Therapists work in the community in a wide range of settings. These include: family homes, nursing homes, community clinics, hospital and day centres.

We work in partnership with a range of other agencies including Social Services and the Voluntary Sector.

It may be appropriate to provide advice to help carers support someone experiencing communication difficulties.

What happens when I become an adult?

The children’s speech and language therapy services refer on anyone known to them whose needs will be better met in adult services. Some young adults may continue to be seen in the children’s and young people’s services until they are 25 years old.
