Supported Internship Guide

Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) are proud to work with local employers to facilitate and support the establishment and growth of our Supported Internship programme. This booklet aims to provide details of these programmes and the important information required.

Supported Internships are designed to develop transferable skills, knowledge and attitudes in readiness for paid employment. Through training and direct work experience young people will develop employability skills, self-confidence, job-specific skills and Maths and English in a real employment setting tailored to their needs and abilities.

Learners will spend the majority of time in their work placement where they will be supported by a trained Job Coach, their role is to support learners with daily tasks and help them to complete them to a high standard. The designated Job Coach will work with learners pre placement to ensure learners have the basic skills and information required for the internship. Post placement the Job Coach will work with learners to identify and plan their progression route.

NSCG Supported Internships are opens to all applicants with moderate learning difficulties (MLD) and who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan). Applicants must be aged 18-24 and keen to enter employment. A full list of eligibility criteria is available within this pack.

NSCG will hold a presentation evening regarding the Supported Internship programme, usually between March and May to enable young people and their families a better understanding of the opportunities on offer. The presentation events is also a good opportunity for interested learners and families to ask questions and submit application forms.

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a skills and capabilities assessment day (June) where they will take part in a short informal interview and be asked to participate in some given tasks. Parents and carers are asked to supply any additional information that will help the interns during their placement. We kindly ask that parents/carers offer their support during their internship and preparations for employment.
