We provide specialist assessment and a range of interventions to enable children with physical difficulties to reach their potential. This may be required during and following illness, surgery, disease, disability or injury.

Who can use our service?

North Staffordshire

The service is available to children and young people aged 0-16 years of age for North Staffordshire (19 years if in a Special School), who are registered with a GP in Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire who have a physical difficulty which is compromising the child’s motor development and/or function.

South Staffordshire

The service is available to children and young people aged 0-19 years of age who are registered with a GP in South Staffordshire who have a physical difficulty which is compromising the child’s motor development and/or function.

Exclusion criteria for both South and North Staffordshire:

Children and young people for whom respiratory difficulties are the presenting problem will remain under the care of the acute/ secondary services.

Are there any costs?

There are no costs.

How do I refer?

Referrals will only be accepted for children and young people registered with a GP in Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire.

Referrals are accepted for children who present with physical difficulties that are compromising their motor development or function.

The Paediatric Physiotherapy Service only accepts referrals from health care professionals which include but are not exclusive to:

  • General Practitioners
  • Health Visitors
  • School Nurses
  • Acute and Community Paediatric health services
  • Allied Healthcare Professionals

What happens after referral?

Once your referral is received, it is triaged by a Senior Clinician. Your child will be seen within the timescale indicated by the reason for referral. You will be sent a letter inviting you to opt in and book an appointment with our admin team.

Referrals triaged and will be contacted by telephone to arrange an appointment.

Clinics are held in a range of locations within Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire

Who will we see?

Children will be assessed by a State Registered Physiotherapist and a treatment plan will be agreed based on the initial assessment findings, if appropriate.

We support the clinical education of Health Care students from local Universities, so there maybe student present at your child’s appointment. You will be informed if this is the case and asked for your consent for the student to be present.

What happens when I come to the service?

A service information leaflet will be sent to you when you are invited to opt into the service giving you a service overview.

A child under the age of 16 years needs parental consent for treatment therefore the person bringing the child must have parental responsibility. 

Part of the assessment may require the child to undress, so appropriate clothing should be worn.

Children will be assessed by a State Registered Physiotherapist and a treatment plan will be agreed based on the initial assessment findings, if appropriate.

What happens when I become an adult?

This will be discussed with the Young Person’s Physiotherapist who can signpost you to appropriate services.
