Disabled Students' Allowance and additional support - Higher education students

Gov.uk

As a higher education student living in England, you can apply for a Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) if you have a:

  • disability

  • long-term health condition

  • mental health condition

  • specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia

Additional Support

The support you get depends on your individual needs and not on income.  See the gov.uk website for an explanation of the process and criteria.

You can get a Disability Students' Allowance in addition to any student finance funding.

You do not need to pay back the Disability Student's Allowance.

Some students may be eligible for additional support direct from the university where they plan to study. Contact individual universities for more information.

How do I apply?

Information on how to apply for a Disabled Student's Allowance can be found on the gov.uk website.

You don't have to have a confirmed university place to apply for a Disabled Student's Allowance. In fact, it's best to apply as early as possible, so that support is in place when your course begins.  You can apply at any point during your studies. You can apply for a Disabled Student Allowance when you apply for student finance.

Where can I find more information?

More information about DSA can be found on the gov.uk website.
