Are there any costs?

There are no costs for assessment or treatment.

How can I refer?

Referral from a qualified healthcare professional (not care agency) via referral form or letter/email if all demographics and relevant information is included.

What happens after referral?

A letter is sent to the person confirming receipt of referral and direct line to department. Referrals are priorities according to need and will be allocated to appropriate person. The waiting time is usually around eight weeks.

Who will we see?

Dependant on need it will either be a

  • Physiotherapist – they will complete a physical assessment on range of movement, posture, strength, flexibility, balance etc. They will identify areas of weakness and will discuss with the person functional goals to work toward reducing the weakness.
  • Occupational Therapist – they will complete an assessment with will include physical aspects as above however also include areas of daily living activity and skills. Emphasis is upon regaining or increasing independent living through adaption or rehabilitation.

What happens when I come to the service?

Appointments are initially 45-60 mins long and dependant on need could include both therapists for a joint assessment. A goal plan is developed which may include treatment at the department or address issues at home. Treatment would run as long as the goals were being worked towards however sometimes these are unachievable so after six weeks these are reviewed to ensure effectiveness. There may be breaks in treatment due to allowing for other aspects to change and a review is carried out to plan the next steps.

What happens when I become an Adult?
